If you're in my business you know that you have to continually shoot personal work in order to stay fresh and conitinue to develop your creativity. Otherwise your work will begin to suffer simply by virtue of doing things the same way over and over. Sometimes the personal work you shoot is everything you hoped for and more, sometimes it's more a way to discover new directions or techniques but either way you continue to learn and grow.

I recently set up a lifestyle shoot to capture some images of teenage fun. I decided to push the envelope a little and use real people instead of professional models. Using real models can sometimes be a gamble which is why when I go this route for a client I always hold a casting session ahead of time in order to see how the people will react on camera. I've shot real people many, many, times but in this case, I decided not to have a casting. Instead I chose to use two teenagers I knew and then push myself to get the images out of them that I wanted. To push it a little further, I decided to use my daughter Isabella as one of them, which if you're a parent you know that choice can be just like shooting personal work - sometimes it's everything you hoped for and sometimes it's not :).

In this case, it was everything I hoped for. I have photographed Isabella before but never like this and never for 3 hours straight. She was terrific and her friend Alafair was fantastic. The two of them took direction beautifully. The cast was stellar, particularly since the weather wasn't what I hope for and I had to use strobes which can slow down the action and the pace on a shoot like this.

Each year, Heath creates original food and lifestyle images to feature on our holiday greeting card. Given the continued excitement about our "Out of Control Mom" picture we thought everyone would appreciate a holiday version.

Prop stylist Tui Stark went all out, again, creating a room worthy of any mother's nightmare. Wardrobe styling courtesy of Abby Bielagus, of Ennis Inc, our model, Emilie Rey, is represented by Model Club, Inc with hair and make/up by CoCo Grace. I wish I looked half as good as Emilie during this hectic holiday season. Maybe next year. Cheers to 2014! ~Jenna

I recently had the opportunity to shoot with Art Director Claudia Catalano-we've been talking about working together for more than 5 years! Claudia came to us with a very cool project; Shooting lifestyle images for professional cutlery manufacturer, Dexter-Russell, images that will ultimately be wrapped around an RV. We needed a working kitchen with lots of stainless steel and lots of space to move around.  The perfect place for that was, as always, the Manitowoc test kitchen in Tampa, FL. I had the added bonus of seeing Caitlin Rodgers again!

Working with Calaudia, Carol and Peter at Catalano Design and with Jim Bellerose from Dexter Russel was terrific and I can't wait to see the RV completed this spring. (check back for another blog posting) It will be outfitted inside with a working kitchen and touring the country visiting culinary schools. Should be in the Boston area in June.

We had to make it look like a the narrow kitchen that you will find in the RV so we made a wall out of stainless steel and used baking sheets to keep it from bending when we held it up.

Over the years we have shot at all of Kathy Trustman's restaurants . This year has been focused on the Met Back Bay which has a great ham and cheese bar, and a number of cool rooms as well as some fantastic outdoor seating.
